I really hope word of mouth spreads about Tactical Barbell (TB). First off, I am a home gym user who is simply looking to get stronger, a little leaner, and improve my cardiovascular health. So please do not let the name of the book deceive you. You do not have to be some SEAL, Ranger, or SWAT operator to use these books. In fact, the author specifically calls out variations for different conditions, i.e., "if you are an operator then this variation is best for you but if you are a civilian simply looking to get stronger then this other variation is best for you." I have purchased and read through all three editions of TB. TB 1 (3rd Ed.) is for maximal strength, TB 2 (Conditioning) shows to intelligently program conditioning into your routines, and now TB 3 (Mass) completes the triad by including hypertrophy programming.This book is laid out similarly to the previous two books however this edition now incorporates programming that will let you run TB indefinitely. I believe this is the author's answer to "5/3/1 Forever", only it is laid out in a more easily consumable format. The author writes like he is a guy in the gym offering advice. It is clear, simple, and to the point.One thing I really like is the author's mentality around conditioning. His approach isn't some, "suck it up, baby," mantra. Instead he offers beginner, recommended, and advanced versions of conditioning. So if you've been sitting on your couch for the past 30 years or you are a high level athlete, there will be something in here for you. And more specifically, intelligent programming that will not hinder your hypertrophy.
K. Black sets the standard for internally-consistent writing about training. This latest book gives a comprehensive treatment without getting bogged down into variables which have only weak effects at best. The book does an excellent job of explaining how to conduct programs which will meet mass gain and conditioning needs, and how to evolve training over time so as to meet strength and more stringent conditioning needs.It is not a book for those who are extremely driven by aesthetic concerns. While there is some information provided on how to address such desires, it is written to an audience that would benefit from more size for professional performance (or in some limited cases, sporting performance) needs. For the intended audience only time and testing will reveal how it might be improved. As delivered it is excellent and I expect that application of the directions within will result in very satisfactory results.
